How to: Unlock Memory Card Password...

If you have a Nokia mobile phone S60, S40 edition etc. and you have protected your memory card with password and forgotten. If one day suddenly you restore your phone , after that you find that your memory card is password protected and shit ! You don’t know the password and have some important files & data in that, what will you do ? Don’t worry, I will show you the way by which you can unlock memory card’s password. If that trick will not work then sorry you can’t recover your memory card’s password & data but yes , I will tell you the other trick by which you can format your memory card and at-least recover your memory card to reuse.

So, these are some tricks to recover your memory card’s password.

If you have a Nokia s60 1st & 2nd edition phone you can find your memory card’s forgotten password by following these steps:

1.Download and Install FExplorer.

2.Insert card into your s60 1st or 2nd edition phone but don’t access it through phone.

3.Run FExplorer and Open the path C:\system.

4.You will find there a file named mmcstore , move this file to other location of your phone, rename the filemmcstore.txt

5.Open the file in your phone or Copy that file(mmcstore.txt) to your pc and open that file in notepad.

6.You will find your password in that file.

7.By this way, you can unlock memory card and recover your memory card’s password.

While searching, I haven’t found any way to find password of Nokia s60 3rd edition phones. But in some s60 3rd edition phones & almost all E-series phones you can unlock your memory card by remote lock option. Follow these steps:-

1.Activate remote lock option by going to Tools ↪ Settings ↪ Security ↪ Phone and SIM ↪ Allow remote lock menu. The password of your memory card will be your remote lock message.

2.Send an sms containing your remote lock message that will automatically change your memory card password.

ACCESS INTERNET FROM MOBILE USING COMPUTERS INTERNET CONNECTION...

Yes, you read it right. I am not talking about using mobile to access internet on your PC. Its the opposite I am demonstrating here. So you will be able to use FREE internet on mobile. Of course, you may need to pay for internet service you use already on PC. Now as with most mobile hacks, this is limited to symbian mobiles which includes almost all Nokia Series60 and Many Sony Ericsson phones.

Why do I need this?

Yep. I felt the same long time back and also left the idea, but our reader Manish wanted to know this. And now I am done with this I am finding this quite useful. I need internet on mobile only to update themes, games and other stuff. Downloading themes, softwares and other stuff on PC and then sending them to mobile is one option but I always find its tedious.

This one is really better as its FREE and speed is much better than what GPRS ever offered!

How it will work?

We normally connect PC and Mobile for file transfer and data synchronization. One step ahead, we use GPRS on mobile to connect internet on PC side. All these means, two devices can connect to each other and share Internet. Only remaining possibility left to check was, can mobile dial/use/access internet on PC?

And here is the solution which will work for sure but may need some efforts…

Requirements…

1.A PC with internet connection. OS does not matter. Also it doesn’t matter how you connect to internet from PC.

2.A symbian handset with GnuBox – a free and open-source tool which will do thing on your handset.

3.mRouter to do things on PC side. Its optional but can save your lots of time. You can manually handle

Now first requirement is obvious, lets take care of the remaining too…

Preparing PC side…

#using mRouter (Windows only)

Windows user can download mRouter. Then install it on your PC and restart the machine.

Next you need to configure mRouter which is quick & easy. Tam Hanna explained it very well here.

#without mRouter

Now all major OS have internet connection sharing feature.

On windows, you need to add a new modem and attach it to COM port which is used fro Mobile-PC communication. As an example check this article for details on how to do it on Windows, Symbian Mobile & Bluetooth channel combo.

Covering all details of other OS is not possible here. Check tutorials section below for a matching reference.

Preparing Mobile side using GnuBox…

Download GnuBox version for your handset models.

GnuBox have a dedicated page here. Do not forget to check it, as it have

For particular instructions for your handset, OS combo, check tutorials from following section.

Tutorials & References…

Official GnuBox page covers most of the details but its not enough for many users. So here is the list of tutorials & references which may help you…

#Windows

Nokia 6620/6670/6260/7610/3230/6630/80/81/N70/N90. Widcomm or Bluesoleil bluetooth drivers. With Screenshots

Using mRouter with palmtop

GnuBox, Nokia 3230, mRouter & windows [pdf format]

#Linux

GnuBox, Nokia 6630 and Gentoo Linux

Nokia 6600 and Linux over Bluetooth

Linux with the Sony-Ericsson P800

#Mac

Share a Internet connection with a Nokia 6600 via MacOS and bluetooth

GnuBox, Nokia 7650/6600 & ALL OS

Share internet and TCP/IP services over Bluetooth

#Videos

You can find many vidoes dedicated for gnubox on YouTube. Watch one which best suits for your task.

Thats it. I know it sounds a lot of work! But its worth it…

I have done this on Nokia N70 and using mRouter on Windows XP machine. So I am quite sure it will work. Still if you stuck somewhere feel free to comment… The interior defense dines under the sabotage.

1Gbps broadband speed plans coming soon for Indian users:..

Broadband users of nine Indian cities will be soon having access to ultra-fast download speeds up to 1Gbps, says telecom infrastructure firm Radius Infratel. The company expects the high speed broadband will be available for users by mid-2013.

"In the next 6-9 months, world class 1,000 Mbps or 1 Gbps (Gigabits per second) plans will be available in India to residential consumers. On connections like these, the same two hour HD movie will download in 30 seconds," Radius Infratel CEO Rajnish Wahi is quoted as saying. At average broadband speeds, the same content takes more than an hour for full download.

Declining to divulge the names of the service providers or areas where the ultra high-speed plans will be first launch, Wahi said that the discussions are underway, while the deployment work is about to be completed in Gurgaon. Radius, Wahi added, has teamed up with real estate developers, including DLF, Unitech, Emaar MGF, Ansal, Mantri, Vipul, ATS, Omaxe, Vipul, M3M, Paramount and Prateek for fibre optic network that will provide high-speed broadband services in projects undertaken by them.

"Radius network is already available in or near 3 lakh homes and is live in Delhi, Gurgaon, Noida, Greater Noida, Indirapuram (Ghaziabad). The network will soon be available in Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai and Chandigarh," Executive Director of Radius Infratel, Kuldeep Goyal is quoted as saying.

It's notable that Bharti Airtel and Tata Teleservice provide 100Mbps plans for users that cost up to Rs. 5,000 per month. State-run telecom operator MTNL offers fiber to the home FTTH plans. One of its plans, Fibre Thrill 2590, features 20Mbps download speeds at a monthly rental of Rs. 2,590, and free 150GB of data. Airtel recently launched its FTTH services in Delhi NCR. The Fibrenet 175GB plan features 100Mbps speed for a data transfer limit of up to 175GB, and 512Kbps thereafter, for Rs 5,299.

Google earlier this year had launched its ultra-fast 1Gbps Fiber Internet and Fiber TV service in Kansas City in the U.S.

Is this Why US Recession Hit the Indian IT industry?

Great economists will always say that education, food and medical industry can never be hurt by any recession. If you dig deep you would find that these are the industries where over consumption can never happen and also, these being a bare necessity can never be compromised irrespective of financial abilities.

So what about the other industries? Are we over consuming them? Can we over consume ERP software or a website design? Yes. And if the following story is to be believed some Big companies are already doing it.

Rahul Agarwal (name changed) was working with an Internationally reputed IT firm in Mumbai. This was his first job. He was assigned a project for this US media giant. It was a content management system for them. He believed an SRS document is where you start your project from but instead he was given a working software made in Java and was asked to replicate it using .NET technology. He did not question much and did what he was told to. With a team of 3 they completed the project in around 4 months. A month later they were asked to make a video uploader plug-in for the same CMS. The plug-in was developed on time and delivered but it did not work on the clients system. They checked it thoroughly on their end and everything was fine. After few follow ups they sent a member of the team on client’s site. They found the problem. The base CMS was not installed properly. Some important system files were missing, without which the system would have never worked. In fact, they also found that the CMS was never used or even tested by the client. Only when they received the plug-in, one of the new employees at the clients team wanted to play around with it and reported the error.

Why did it all happen? Well this is what Rahul got to know through his senior.

In US, most established companies have an IT budget. This IT budget is huge(until recession), usually more than what is required, set to satisfy ego and beat the competitor in numbers. The person in-charge of the budget has to spend it (err, utilise it) within the stipulated time. No one bothers to dig deep in what he spends or how effectively he spends but if he is unable to spend it, his job is questioned. So this in-charge first got the (not needed)system developed in Java. On being advised by the account manager (from the IT company) got it changed to .Net and then added a costly plugin to it. Everyone involved makes a personal cut in the whole transaction so nobody questions it (and we believed only the Indian government had corruption problem).

When the inflow of money was low for the media company the IT budgets were cut down (because even the competitor did that. Herd mentality!) and hence we saw the US recession hit Indian IT companies as well. If the Indian companies were solving only a problem or making something that would increase efficiency or add value of any kind this would have never happened. They wouldn’t have been hit by recession but also there wouldn’t have been any IT boom in India. It has become a norm in US to outsource IT work to India, the lowest bidder wins the contract irrespective of what value he adds.

After knowing this Rahul only waited for his minimum service period bond to expire. He now runs an IT services startup in Guwahati, along with his school time friend who quit Infosys, and makes more than double of his last salary. He is satisfied with the work and makes sure every program made finds a user (and not only a buyer).

I don’t know to what extent the IT budget thing is true but here are 3 lessons to learn from it:

1.Over consumption has to halt some day. In the long run its better to design for nails that need to be hammered than ones ready to be hammered.
2.Too much resources can spoil you. Startups, let not the money saving habbit get lost after funding. Rather have a huge party budget than an unneeded IT budget.
3.For a programmer, code is like a poetry, and a poet certainly doesn’t like obscurity. So next time when you ask your programmer to build something, let him know why no one read his last poem.
It was not a stable economy that was hit by recession, just an over consumption that got normal. Your views?

How To Backup Your Gmail Account To YOUR Hard Drive...

Do you use Gmail? Of course you do – doesn’t everybody?
The Google gives you tons of space to store your precious email and attachments. We have found ways to use that space for our evil practical ways. We all know The Google backs up regularly and runs some of the biggest redundant data centers in the world, but do you really trust your emails from your long lost girlfriend attachments of your trip to that sci fi convention important work emails and attachments with them?
Wouldn’t you feel safer with a backup of your own? Of course you would young Admin! It is one of the rules I preach daily as a Network Administrator.

Enough beating around the bush – the tool is called simply GMail Backup and guess what it can do?

Wow you guys are on the ball today! Yup it can backup your entire Gmail account including attachments to a local folder on your computer. That is backup entire Gmail account on your hard drive. Ready to check it out? The GUI version of this is WINDOWS ONLY but there is also a command line version that works on Linux and Mac.

The installer version 0.44 is 4.4 MB and can be downloaded from here (Windows, Linux or Mac). The Windows download is directly available here. After installing it you can launch it from your start menu.

This is as simple as it gets guys. Easy as….well easy as typing in your username and password and clicking a few buttons.

You will have a full local copy (or a backup filtered by date). These messages are able to be opened in Outlook Express or similar email programs – and get this they will retain all their attachments! This is a glimpse of the file structure Gmail Backup creates. As you can see in the screen shot below it used the path I specified in the GUI and if I had folders created in my account it would have created those sub folders as well.

It gets even better. You can restore your local emails right back to Gmail with the click of the restore button. Awesome!

Is anyone using another method to do this? (Yes this is done via IMAP but it does not require any technical knowledge other than clicking and installing.) Let us know in the comments! Let’s hear how MakeUseOf’s superstars are backing up their Gmail accounts….or if you think we need to..

Windows 8 Tricks, Tips and Shortcuts...

Windows 8 Consumer Preview cracked 1 million downloads shortly after launching last Wednesday and I'm sure many of you have tried it already. Whether you went with a dual-boot, upgrade, clean install or virtual machine, if you're coming from Windows 7 you'll notice significant changes immediately, while others may not be as obvious.
Inevitably, with change comes good and bad -- at least until you learn some tricks that get you back up to speed. I know I've been hitting my head against the wall when things don't behave the way they used to. The Start menu's absence is a perfect example of a radical change. Indeed, the duality of the OS may bring some trouble, but as skeptical as I was, I must admit Microsoft has done a pretty good job of easing many of my concerns.

Metro is undoubtedly very touch-oriented and perhaps a beginner's dream come true. For experienced users, it seems like Windows 8 still holds some promise. The devil is in the details, they say, so besides experimenting with a clean install I tried the upgrade option to see how well it worked. Going from a year-old Windows 7 install to the Consumer Preview was as seamless as you could ask for.
File copy dialogs, the task manager and search look better and work faster, and that adds up for an improved experience. I'm not loving Metro on my desktop since there's little I can currently do with the stock apps, but I wonder if that will be true once my most-used programs take full advantage of live tiles.
Without further ado, here's a shortlist of Windows 8 shortcuts and useful quick tricks I've gathered thus far..

Hot corners

The Start menu is no longer there, but there's a hot corner that makes up for it (unfortunately on multiple screens it's somewhat of a pain to use).

Lower-left corner + Left click Goes to the Start screen (Metro).

Lower-left corner + Right click Power user shortcut menu (Device Manager, Control Panel, Command Prompt, Power Options, etc.).

Upper-left corner Shows open window thumbnails, click to switch between them.

Upper screen limit + Click & Drag on desktop Move to left or right to snap the current desktop or Metro app to one side of the screen.

Lower-right corner Windows 8 Charm menu or Windows Aero Peak.

Upper-right corner Shows Windows 8 charm menu.

Keyboard shortcuts

Windows 8 is very hotkey-heavy, here are some of the shortcuts I find most useful:

  • Windows key Shows the new Start screen (Metro).
  • Win + type keyword Instant application search (same as in Windows 7).
  • Win + D Standard Windows desktop. Also minimizes/restores all open windows in desktop mode.
  • Win + Q Shows all installed apps.
  • Win + W Instant search for settings.
  • Win + F Instant search for files.
  • Win + I Settings sidebar (control panel, network, volume, brightness, notifications, and more).
  • Win + P Shows multi-monitor options, also useful for connecting an external monitor or projector.
  • Win + X Power user shortcut menu (Device Manager, Control Panel, Command Prompt, Power Options, etc.).
  • Win + Z Shows App Bar in Metro applications.
  • Win + . (period) Snaps the current Metro app to the right side of the screen. Do it twice and it will snap to the left.
  • Win + . (period) + Shift Snaps the current Metro app to the left side of the screen.
  • Win + J Switches focus between snapped Metro apps.
  • Win + Page Up / Down Moves full-screen Metro app to secondary monitor.
  • Win + Left / Right arrow Moves and snaps desktop applications in that direction, or to a different monitor.
  • Win + Tab Switches between open applications. Similar to using the left-upper hot corner with a mouse.
  • Win + L Locks Windows.
You can snap Metro apps or your desktop to the side and continue working on the center of the screen.
Another shortcut lets you switch focus between the two.
Showing all apps at once (Windows Phone style) and searching with a few keystrokes is
the Windows 8 equivalent to the old Programs menu.

Get the Start Menu back, orb and all!
Following user posts in our previous Windows 8 articles, I've seen some of you wanting to completely get rid of Metro and get the Windows 7 orb back. If that's the case I'd personally recommend you just stick to Windows 7, but if you already jumped ship there's a trick to do so as discussed on AskVG.

Updated: A second, improved alternative The clever folks at Stardock have released a piece of software called Start 8 that essentially adds a Start button to Windows 8's desktop mode. When you click on it you get a Metro-esque Start menu from where you can search and access other settings.

That's it for now. Did we miss anything important? Have a Windows 8 how-to question? Let us know in the comments and we'll do our best to come up with a solution.

How to Become a Mobile Java Developer for Nokia...

The future for mobile applications is extremely bright and developers working on Java ME definitely have a bright future. Java ME is still by far the largest platform out there with arguably the best developer tools, frameworks and books a developer can ask for. Already there are many mobile applications based on this platform that are used in various smart phone models. For mobile java developers, the best company to work with is Nokia. Nokia has already used Java based mobile applications in their mobile phones and are always in hunt of skilled developers.

1.Learn the languages you need to know.
There are currently 4 languages you can learn to build an application for Nokia mobile devices. They are: Symbian C++, J2ME (Java), Python for Series 60 and Flash Lite.

2.Choose the language you want to specialize and enroll yourself to some courses to learn that language thoroughly. If Java language is your preference for remote access, JSR-82 (Bluetooth API) is one of the option used by developers. Learn it and become an expert on this.

3.Using the JSR-82 (Bluetooth API) start building an application for Nokia mobile users. To begin with, make a draft about the idea of the application and how it's going to function.

4.Note down the benefits that the user would be getting from these applications. If any similar application is there, study it thoroughly and find out how your application is going to be better than the existing one and how it can bring revolution to the mobile industry.

5.Become a member of Forum Nokia as it provides a good set of docs and tools to start developing Mobile Java apps. Go through the study materials to make your base more stronger and clear.

6.Join other forums designed for mobile application developers and post regular updates about the application you are developing. Here you can also get updates about new openings and requirements.

7.In case of any problem, ask the experts available at Forum Nokia for their guidance.

8.Also attend seminars, conferences and workshops organized for mobile application developers. Here you can get insights into what is going on in the mobile industry. If you are based in Australia, you can attend the upcoming Forum Nokia Developers Conference which will take place in Sydney on 3rd march, 2010.

9.Always try to build relationships with other developers with whom you can share a mutually beneficial relationship. This will help in upgrading your skills.

10.Look for openings for developers posted by Nokia. Apply for them and if the experts like your skills and ideas, you can surely get the chance to work with this industry leader.

Hiding Drives in Windows Operating System...

Suppose if you have got some important data in some drive and you do not want to accidentally loose that data. For example, some recovery drive that contains recovery image of your full system What you can do is hide the drives. So the drives wont be visible in “My Computer”. This trick will only hide the drive from being displayed. Applications and command prompt will still have access to it and you can still manually browse to the folder if you type in the path.

In this example, we’ll be hiding D drive in Windows 7. The steps for Windows XP/Vista are also same.

Open up regedit.exe by using the start menu search box (or type it in Run), and then browse down to the following key.
HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionPoliciesExplorer If the Explorer key does not exist, you can right-click on Policies, select New Key and name it Explorer. Create a new key by doing a right click > New DWORD (32-bit) value and name it “NoDrives”.

This value is a 32 bit number, and the bits are arranged in reverse order with a value of 1 hiding that particular drive. For example, here we want to hide D: drive we would arrange it like this:

If we convert 1000 to decimal, we get decimal value of 8 or hex value of 8, so if you double-click on the key in the registry editor, choose Decimal and then enter 8 into the value field.

To see the changes, just restart your computer or log off and log in again.

If you want to disable this tweak, simply remove the NoDrives registry key. Here’s a list of the values you’ll have to enter for a few different drive letters.

If you want to hide any other drive or a combination of drives you can figure out the correct binary code and convert that into decimal or hex value. (Hint: Use calculator in scientific mode for binary to decimal/hex conversion.) Hide your windows drive make them personalize…make them invisible to hide your all naughty things… and share with us for what all reasons you have used it…

With the number of paid to click (PTC) sites out there on the internet, it's difficult to find a reliable and trustworthy site that will pay its members to view advertisements as well as stick around long enough for members to reap the benefits. NeoBux does just that and allows anyone with patience and persistence to earn money online simply for viewing advertisements.

Instructions

1 Keep in mind that this PTC site is in no way a get rich quick method and should not be looked at as a sole method to make money online. If you want to try out this route, it's best to look at it as a side hobby...something you can spend 10 minutes a day doing.

2 Another thing to keep in mind is that there is absolutely no requirement to invest any money on your part. NeoBux does allow you to rent referrals as well as upgrade your account, but you can easily do this with your earnings. If you would prefer to invest money in order to speed things along, you are able to, but it is totally optional.

3 Sign up for an account at NeoBux (see Resource Section below for a direct link).

4 Once you are signed up, you can begin to get paid to click on advertisements. Standard membership pays $0.01 per ad and provides you with anywhere from 4-6 ads per day. It's not much to start out with at all, which is why I recommend you consider it a hobby for now.

5 When you have earned enough money, rent some referrals. With the Standard Membership, you earn an additional $0.005 for each advertisement your referrals view. This PTC site allows you to rent referrals starting at $0.28 per referral for 30 days. However, do not spend all of your earnings on referrals! You will need to keep a little extra in your account in order to renew or recycle your referrals if need be. NeoBux allows you the ability to recycle your rented referrals should they become inactive and aren't earning money. This is a great addition when you consider that when direct referrals stop clicking, you stop earning and have no control over it.

6 Once you have some rented referrals under your belt, active the Auto Pay feature. When a referral logs into their account and clicks on an ad, their rental history is automatically extended for one day. This is a great way to keep active referrals and make it easier for you to make money online. In addition, it will save you 10% off of the standard monthly referral rate.

7 When you log in to view advertisements each day, take a look at your referrals to monitor their activity. If any of them are inactive, you can easily recycle them for a new referral for $0.08 in order to keep your referral activity level up and earn more money online. How long you allow a referral to remain inactive is completely up to you, but if possible, it is recommended that you do not let them go more than 4 days without any activity.

8 Continue to repeat steps 4 through 7. Remember it may take some time to earn money online and increase the number of your rented referrals.

9 When you have earned enough money, upgrade your account to Golden (membership costs $90.00). The Standard membership will only allow you to rent up to 500 referrals. By upgrading to Golden (or higher) you can rent even more referrals and save on rental costs.

10 Again, repeat steps 4 through 7 on a daily basis. As your referral list grows, you may find that you will need to spend more time each day at NeoBux in order to monitor activity. By this time, however, you should be earning more than pennies a day.

How to Earn Money By Developing ANDROID JAVA Applications..

In the world of competition between smartphones like Blackberry, iPhone and Droid, application developers have a huge potential to become rich in less time. Android is a software stack developed by GOOGLE for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. It is easy to earn money by developing Android JAVA based applications by following techniques and guidance from this article.

Instructions

1 ANDROID SDK SETUP

Visit the development tools website for Android from the link given in references of this article. Assuming that you are using Windows operating system, download the Android SDK for Windows. Unpack the downloaded .zip file to a safe location. Add this location to the PATH variable by Right-clicking My Computer, Select properties, select Environment Variables under Advanced settings. Add the path location to the PATH variable by editing it. Install SDK by running SDK Setup.exe from root directory of SDK tool.

2 ECLIPSE PLUG-IN SETUP

Android offers a custom plug-in for the Eclipse IDE, called Android Development Tools (ADT). This provides a good advantage if you are also developing applications for Blackberry smartphone. This way you can develop applications in parallel for both the platforms, i.e. Blackberry and Android. Install the Eclipse IDE 3.4 (Ganymede) from its website. Open Eclipse IDE and in the software updates, type the URL https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/eclipse/ and install the updates. Modify your Eclipse preferences to point to the Android SDK directory.

3 PROGRAMMING FUNDAMENTALS

Android applications are written in the JAVA programming language. There are various APIs specifically written for Android which can be used for preparing applications specific to certain device running on Android platform. Once an application is successfully compiled, a .apk file is generated. One .apk file is one complete Android application.

4 TEST APPLICATION

Once the Android Plug-in for Eclipse is installed successfully, restart Eclipse tool and start developing a Test application project.

1) Select File > New Project > Android Project 2) Enter a name for project. Select a Build Target 1.4, 1.5 or 1.6 and Enter Application Name, Package Name and Min SDK Version. 3) Click on "Finish". Copy the source code for a basic Hello World project from the link given in resources. Build project and Run on the Emulator.

5 SIGNING APPLICATIONS

It is important to Sign an application before publishing it for security and integrity reasons. If you are using Eclipse tool and if ADT has proper access to the Keytool then there is no specific action required. The application will be signed when it is compiled and debugged. To sign an application for public release, obtain a signature for public release and compile the application in Release mode by following procedure outlined on Android Developers website.

6 PUBLISHING APPLICATIONS

It is important to Test your application before releasing on an actual device rather than just the Emulator. You will have to purchase either an Android running phone like Motorola Droid or an Android Development phone. Add an End User license agreement and publish on Android Market.

7 EARNING REVENUE FROM APPLICATIONS

The most important reason for application development is to earn money. You will need to pay a one time registration fee of $25 to become an Android developer and publish applications. Once your application is published on Android Market and people all over the world start downloading the application at your published price, you will receive 70% of the revenue while Google will keep 30% of it. For example, an application worth $1 downloaded by 1000 people will earn you 70% of that which is $700. If you develop a very good quality application, you can earn prize money of $150,000 or 100,000 or 50,000 or 25,000 based on overall ratings given by users through Android ADC2 challenge.

How to Write a Facebook Application in 5 minutes

Things you need: You don’t have to be a “geek” for writing basic Facebook Applications. All you need is some knowledge of web programming languages and some free space on a web server where you’ll host your Facebook app (which are nothing but simple PHP files). OK, let’s get started.

Step 1. Assuming that you already have an account on Facebook, add the Developer application to your Facebook profile and then click “Set Up New Application”.

Step 2. Give your new Facebook App a name, agree to the terms and then upload some image for your application logo.

Step 3. From the Application settings, choose Canvas and set FBML as the rendering method. The other option is IFRAME but we’ll use FBML for the moment to keep things simple.

Step 4. Using any WYSIWYG HTML editor (or even notepad), write the content that you want to display inside your Facebook application.

In this example, we are adding just two hyperlinked images with a Google search box and therefore the code looks something like this:

Step 5. Log in to your web server where you’ll be hosting the Facebook App and create a sub-directory called “facebook”. So if you domain is example.com, the Facebook app can be accessed from example.com/facebook.
Under the facebook directory, download (wget) the fbook.php.txt application template and rename the file to index.php. Replace the API Key and the Secret key in index.php with real values and also copy-paste the HTML (that you created in Step 4) into the index.php file.

Step 6. While you are inside the “facebook” directory, download the Facebook library (through wget) and extract the files in this archive via gunzip and tar. Now execute the following command to move facebook.php and other library files outside the facebook-platform subdirectory. $ mv facebook-platform/client/facebook*.php .

Step 7. We are almost done. Go back to your Facebook Application page in the browser, click “Edit Settings” and set the values for Canvas.

• The Canvas Page URL – choose a nice vanity URL for your Facebook application.
• The Canvas Callback URL – location of the web service where your files are hosted (in our case, this will be example.com/facebook). That’s it. Anyone can now add your Facebook app to their profiles either in the Boxes tab or in the sidebar of the main profile page. Check the “Stay Connected” box on this Facebook page for a working demo. Extend your Facebook Apps We just created a basic app but you can make it more useful with simple modifications. Some ideas:

#1. You can incorporate RSS feeds in your Facebook apps though a feed parsing library like SimplePie.

#2. You can track your Facebook application usage via Google Analytics. Just add the following code in the PHP code.

#3. You can use the same CSS Styles and color schemes for your Facebook Apps that are used on the main Facebook site.

#4. If you want to embed YouTube video or Slideshare presentations in your Facebook apps, you should use the tag.

#5. Instead of using a plain search box, you should consider using the Google AJAX search API as that will let you customize the look and feel of search results to match other elements on the Facebook page.
